About Nicki Voss

Nicki Voss is a visual and textile artist based in Los Angeles. Her work in fabric is characterized by her love of color and fascination with mapping, geography, and geometry. She holds a Design and Technology Diploma from Richmond Upon Thames College in the UK and is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts, with BFA and MFA degrees from the School of Art, where she studied with Michael Asher, John Baldessari, Connie Hatch, and others.

Nicki’s work in quilted textiles originates with outdoor photography translated into shapes and color compositions materialized in cloth. This technique evolved from work in paper with three-dimensional qualities. Quilt making, with the use of templates, grids, and math, was a likely extension in which to apply systematic collage techniques to cloth instead of print media. The slow, methodical, and organic process of arranging small fabric shapes into dense color compositions creates a tangible landscape, equally abstract and structurally familiar.

Born in London to German parents, Nicki’s childhood was characterized by frequent moves across multiple continents due to her father’s work as a writer and foreign correspondent. Her awareness of place, as tied to location and geography, is imbued with a keen sensitivity to visual composition and how we understand what it means to “belong somewhere” or to be “from someplace.” Frequent travel and family camping trips as a child nurtured her love of the natural environment and the outdoors. At last count, she owns 4 world atlases, 39 reference books on nature, and over 140 maps and travel guides.
