LA Fire Harbinger (1 & 2)

Created in the aftermath of the devastating fires that swept through Los Angeles in early 2025, the LA Fire Harbinger diptych emerges from a place of deep reflection and urgency. The dominant black color resonates powerfully, mirroring the charred landscapes and encapsulating a pervasive anxiety about our world.

Each panel showcases varying lengths and textures of black fibers, intentionally chosen to evoke the transformative nature of darkness. On the left panel (1), a three dimensional composition references charred burning structures. On the right panel (2), a panicked horse gallops with a visceral expression of flight, serving as an allegory for the experience of fleeing encroaching flames. Embroidery stitches applied by hand on both panels in various shades of orange and metallic thread reference chaotic clusters of sparks and embers.

The title, LA Fire Harbinger, serves as an omen that extends beyond the immediate devastation, foreshadowing a broader, destructive chapter in our collective narrative.

Designed and crafted by Nicki Voss. LA Fire Harbinger may be viewed as a diptych or separately as individual panels (1 or 2).

These art quilts are made with new cotton materials with hand cut bias tape specifically matched to the color characteristics of the composition.

Twill tape sleeves are included on the backs for hanging.
